In the summer of 1981, shortly after Carolina Herrera launched the inaugural collection for her eponymous fashion line at the Metropolitan Club in New York City, she and her husband, Reinaldo, met Andre Leon Talley for the July issue of this. magazine. Ms. Herrera admitted to having traveled with between ten and fifteen pieces of luggage; stated that when she visited Reinaldo’s mother’s house in Venezuela, her exercise in addition to tennis, horseback riding and swimming consisted of walking among the 65 rooms of the mansion; and revealed that all of her lingerie was couture, made especially for her in her native Caracas. Now 82, Carolina Herrera is revisiting (and revising) parts of that conversation.

“I no longer travel with a lot of luggage. It’s too complicated because you can’t find anyone to wear it. My philosophy now is to travel very, very light. I still use my same luggage and will not change it.

“For me, a really good exercise is to walk an hour a day, preferably in beautiful Central Park. It’s also good for your mind.

“I came to the conclusion that the closet size doesn’t matter, and what really matters is what’s inside. I keep my favorite dresses because I always end up wearing them over and over again.

“If I had to pick a style icon today it would be the Queen of England because for all these years she has always looked flawless. “

———

“I never liked trends because everyone is alike. You have to have a little imagination to be different.

———

“I still feel the same about the sleeves that frame your face. But today there are other things that they want to show that are not the face.

———

“My eating habits are more or less the same. But if I find a box of chocolates, I’ll eat it all easily if I’m not careful.

———

“Colors are very important in fashion. I’ve always liked yellow because it’s the color of the sun and it makes you happy.

———

“I feel like nothing is perfect and that it takes an effort to make it almost perfect. Perfection does not exist.”

———

“Posture is always very important because it makes you look younger. “

———

“I still love jewelry; but you have to be careful how you wear it, and not look like a Christmas tree with everything on it.

———

“I love flowers. I love peonies, lilacs, roses, sweet peas and fields of daffodils and bluebells. I live with flowers in my house, not for a special occasion, but for that of my husband and my everyday life.

———

“I think I have proven myself as a designer because it’s been 40 years, and it continues even now with Wes Gordon doing a fabulous job.”

———

“I’m never bored. And now I think life isn’t too short. It’s too long to be bored.

———

“I’m still very superstitious, which is why I’m not going to talk about it.”
