Relationship Stories: “The lingerie I thought my husband bought me went to his mistress”

Here is the last opus of Divorce diaries, a series exploring the stories behind marriages ending and what happens next.

It reads like something straight out of the plot of Love, in fact:

Devoted spouse – and crazy mother of two – falls on beautiful Christmas present among her husband’s belongings a week before Christmas. A delighted woman is looking forward to Christmas Day. The woman finally opens her gift, only to find that these beautiful gifts clearly went to someone else.

A stoic woman sort of stands together for Christmas, waiting for their children to go to her sister’s house the following afternoon before confronting her husband and asking who he gave jewelry and lingerie to for Christmas.

Emma thompson It was actually the first thought I had when I opened the gift and it was a fluffy dress and slippers, ”says Michelle.

Like the character of Emma Thompson in Love in fact – who cried as she listened to the Joni Mitchell album her husband gave her, rather than the lanky gold heart-shaped necklace she thought was coming to her secretary – Michelle too had assumed that the gifts she had found were for her. After all, they would be a strange or downright inappropriate gift for someone else.

She had found a gorgeous Zoe & Morgan necklace (her favorite brand), as well as black lingerie of some description – she hadn’t quite figured out what it was (or if her husband was the right size for her). ) because it was folded so nicely like a piece of origami, she was worried that she would not be able to put it back to the state she found it.

So when she opened the gift and found that it was very different from what she thought she was receiving, she felt a stab in the stomach.

“But then I thought maybe it was just Mum’s cute present he was giving me to open in front of the kids,” she said, thinking he would surprise her with the lowest rated gift ever. once the children went to bed.

And so, she spent the day with a knot in her stomach, wondering if the surprise she was going to have that night would be a gift, or just knowing that her husband was probably Cheating on her.

She found herself watching him closely all day – was he acting weird? Did he seem suspicious among her family? Was he showing any signs that he felt guilty? Did he check his phone a lot? Be secret?

After an already exhausting day – made all the more tiring by the fact that she tied it in eerie knots – Michelle put the kids to bed, cleaned up with her husband, and then jumped in the shower.

“I had such a long shower,” she says. “I kind of zoned myself, thinking of everything. You know, there had been so many people all day, always around me.”

Finally, she had time to be alone with her thoughts.

She thought a lot about the fact that when she got out of the shower it would be the moment of truth – he would be there waiting with the gift, or not.

“I also gave a lot of thought to the fact that my very first thought was that this was a sign that he was cheating on me,” she says. “Really, my first thought should have been that there was no way he would give me lingerie in front of the kids, and of course he would give it to me later. But my instincts immediately thought to cheat. “

She wished she could have been in the shower forever, but she finally got out, walked around the now dark house, and found her husband, already asleep in his bed.

“I wanted to wake him up by yelling at him, or throwing water or something at him,” she said. “I was so, so angry.”

But she didn’t want to wake the children up and make them remember Christmas Day as the day their mother lost the plot against their father. So she slipped between the sheets and had the worst night’s sleep of her life.

It wasn’t until the kids were gone for the afternoon that she finally broke.

“He tried to play the fool and pretend he didn’t know what I was talking about,” she said. “He denied everything.

But when Michelle said she was going to pick up her phone and call Zoe & Morgan and ask for a copy of the receipt, he relented and said he had brought a gift.

“Then he tried to pretend it was for me and he intended to give it to me that night,” she said. “So I asked for it, but he said it was at his desk because he didn’t want it in the house in case I found him. It was crap! Know what it is. was !!! And he didn’t care that I found him when he left between his pants. “

So Michelle said that she would happily go in the car with him and go to her workplace to pick it up.

“He was caught off guard. He’d given that damn thing to that other woman by then, but he must have thought he might just go and buy another one if he could get away from me for an hour.

As he wondered what to do, Michelle kept yelling at him to get in the car and show him where the gift was.

“Then he invented these bulls – t he had given it to his friend to give it to his woman because he forgot to bring her anything. It was too late to buy anything by then and he had something else to give me, before replacing my own present later. But that failed when I asked him to call his friend on the speakerphone and ask him what his wife thought of the gift. “

Eventually he had to realize that he was completely caught off guard and couldn’t get himself out of the situation and confessed to what he had done – sort of.

“The full tosser tried to tell me it was just a one-off thing, which blew me up,” she said. “Why would you buy a one-night stand ‘mistake’ a necklace and underwear?!?!”

Michelle threw him out of the house, only letting him go home when she took the kids from the campsite.

“I told the children that he suddenly had to go abroad to work, and because of MIQ he would be stuck for some time,“She said.” My parents thought I went a bit far in doing this and keeping them for him, but he’s lucky he can see them again after what he did to me. “

It’s now as her first Christmas approaches since the entire Ugly Debacle and Michelle is now set to spend her first Christmas bachelor, with her kids and extended family – while her ex spends the holidays with the family. of his new girlfriend. “I just want to note that no, that’s not the girl he bought the presents for,” she said. “Or the girl he dated after that and tried to introduce the kids after a week of knowing him. This one he’s been seeing for a few months, as far as I know, and she seems to think she’s got it. a real trap. “

But, she still hopes better days come. “And he’s the one who lost everything,” she said. “He can’t be with his kids almost every day, and they are the best ever.”

Although she wishes everything would turn out differently for her children, she says she learned an important lesson last Christmas. “I think I’ve learned to listen to my gut more,” she says. “There were signs that he was cheating on me for years and I didn’t want to recognize him. I didn’t even stop to think about it, it’s like my subconscious chose to ignore him. Now I I’m not going to go into this again because I allow myself to think and feel things and question them. I’m much more dependent on listening to my instincts. “
