NEW YORK, January 26 — Although consumer shopping habits have changed dramatically recently when it comes to second-hand clothes, it’s still not easy to resell, let alone buy, underwear second hand.

To tackle this problem head-on, American start-up Parade has launched a nationwide recycling program to collect used underwear, including panties and flip-flops, and turn them into furniture, rugs and insulators.

What to do with your used underwear? At a time when recycling, upcycling and thrift stores are taking root in consumers’ wardrobes, the question of underwear persists.

Reselling a sweater or a dress on a second-hand platform is not exactly the same as sorting out your used underwear… Because these are items that, once worn, are not really appreciated in a second life.

To remedy this, and help reduce the textile waste generated by this sector, an American brand is presenting a new kind of recycling program: “Second Life by Parade”.

In partnership with the specialized company TerraCycle, the Parade brand recovers your underwear thanks to biodegradable recycling kits, then sends them to TerraCycle so that they are shredded, then recycled into surprising new products.

Your boxers, briefs, thongs and panties will be transformed into carpets, soundproofing materials, furniture and even bedding. In return, customers will receive a 20% discount on Parade’s sustainable products.

More concretely, you just have to order a free kit and fill it with used underwear or underwear you don’t wear.

However, be aware that the brand does not yet take swimsuits or bras. They accept items of all brands, but they must be washed. This is an important detail.

The two partners take care of the rest, and allow you to obtain your discount in exchange. Note that the service is only available in the United States.
