Key pieces: Wool basics are essential to the Visvim Sport collection, but the lightweight GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY jacket, tone-on-tone black FKT Runner sneakers and designer duffel bag add extra weight to the case.
Buy: visvim’s website and flagship stores from July 17th.
Editor’s Notes: The detail-obsessed design practice of visvim founder Hiroki Nakamura has drawn workwear enthusiasts and Kanye followers alike, but gym rats could be the next crowd to jump on the brand’s bandwagon. Well, probably not, but maybe the screw heads will hit the weights a bit more now that Nakamura is launching visvim Sport, an athleisure collection designed to its usual extreme quality standards.
“I used to go to the gym, but… I realized that the reason I didn’t go anymore was because I didn’t have anything that I liked to wear,” said Nakamura in a statement. I don’t like the slippery feel of synthetic fabrics, so I have to train at home in my underwear. That’s why I wanted to create sportswear that I want to wear. “
If you are wondering what Nakamura wore when throwing vintage medicine balloons at home: yes visvim made underwear. However, now you can expect to see him sweat it out in visvim Sport’s washable wool basics, cut in shapes reminiscent of ’50s workout clothes.
Wisely, visvim does not get into the technical athletics battle between behemoths like Nike, Under Armor and Lululemon; instead, he creates workout-friendly clothing that maintains his usual retro inspiration – even the lookbook features old-fashioned exercise equipment.
This first drop includes an oversized black t-shirt, tank top, and two types of shorts – boxing-inspired or swim-ready – as well as the aforementioned jacket, sneakers, and bag. As usual, the clothes are as high end as anything with the visvim tag.
“We chose wool as the main material, which was used in old sportswear before the creation of synthetic fibers,” Nakamura continued. “The 17.5 micron New Zealand wool is very breathable, but also comfortable to wear. This is a functional and classic sports collection interpreted for modern use.”
The premium raw wool that Visvim obtained for this company is more organic than most of the performance merino wool used for most contemporary sportswear, but they both share similar properties: they are sweat-wicking, dry quickly, are breathable, stretchy and odor-fighting.
